  • Course Description

    this Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies is the only programme in Hong Kong that focuses on museum studies alone.  It encompasses the study of museums, muselogy and the development of the knowledge and skills necessary for museum practice and research.  A uniquely enriching experience, the program investigates the theory and history of collecting material things, their display and interpretation, intangible cultural heritage and the changing nature of the museum as a concept and as an organisation.  Museum Studies offers an academic and vocational learning program to students from a wide range of disciplinary fields including history, art history, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, leisure sutdies, architecture, natural history and environmental studies.

    This programme aims at introducing the essence of museology and museum management to people who want to become museum professionals. A wide range of subjects from exhibition planning, collection, acquisition, evaluation, maintenance, resource development, financial planning will be included. The Practicum in the form of internship in local galleries and museum enables students to acquire practical experience in a professional organisation.

      International students with an appropriate background and competence in academic English may complete the program in one year of full time study. Those students without high levels of English competency may be advised to allow three semesters for completion.

  • Programme Structure

    A Graduate Diploma requires the satisfactory completion of 6 units of study (36 credit points). The GradDip may be undertaken full time over 1 year, or part time (up to 3 years). This programme include core or compulsory units of study. Candidates who have satisfird the requirements for the award of the GradDip may apply to upgrade to the Master course in the same sequence, provided that their results are of sufficient merit. Credit average 65% or above.

  • Delivery

    • The Graduate Diploma / Master of Museum Studies is a part-time programme with lectures, tutorials, workshops, site visits, presentation and projects. There will also be case study so that students can share the experience of outstanding examples.
    • Classes will be conducted in English. Course materials and lecture handouts will mainly be in English. References may include both English and Chinese materials.
    • Each unit of study will be delivered intensively over an 8-10 day period: Two Saturdays (9.00am & 5.00 pm), Mon, Tue, Thurs & Friday, 6.30 - 9.30p.m.
    • The first unit of study will start in in 4 August 2012.
  • Entry Requirements

    1. Applicants should at least hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in a relevant field in humanities or social sciences or equivalent.
    2. English Language Requirements:

    Applicants who hold a qualification awarded with in the last five years by a University where all courses are taught in English are required to provide a letter from the institution stating the English is the standard language of instruction.  All other applicants are required to provide evidence of IELTS with an overall score of 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.0 in each band.

    • Complete application form;
    • Enclose copies of academic transcript, evidence of citizenship e.g. HKID card or passport, evidence of English Language requirement e.g. IELTS test result completed within the last 2 years with overall score of 7.0 and a minimunm of 6 in each band or a letter from the University certifying that the medium of instruction at that institution is English.
    • Enclose a crossed cheque, payable to HKU SPACE (HKD$150) for application fee.
  • Payment Method

    Tuition fee payment by bank draft, payable to "The University of Sydney". Or, online payment to The University of Sydney.
